This Mercer Island driveway and entryway renovation stands out not just for how it looks — but for how many everyday problems it solved.
The Before: Worn Concrete and Drainage Challenges
The original poured concrete driveway was cracked, uneven, and showing its age. Over time, it created several issues:
- Poor drainage with water collecting near the garage
- Uneven surfaces that felt dated and less safe
- A front approach that didn’t match the home’s character
- Minimal visual connection between the driveway and entry
Like many older Mercer Island homes, the structure was solid — but the hardscape no longer supported how the homeowners wanted to use the space.
The Vision: Practical, Timeless, and Built to Last
During the design consultation, the focus was on more than replacing concrete with pavers. The goal was to create a driveway that:
- Manages water effectively in a Northwest climate
- Feels intentional and welcoming from the street
- Complements the home’s architecture
- Holds up to daily vehicle traffic with minimal maintenance
That meant improving grading, refining transitions, and choosing materials that balance durability with style.
The After: Clean Lines and Cohesive Design
The finished driveway features Catalina Grana pavers in the Victorian color blend, installed in a classic “C” pattern. The warm mix of grays and earth tones pairs naturally with the home’s brick and siding.
A double charcoal border frames the driveway and walkways, adding contrast and definition. At the entry, new Weston stone steps with charcoal coping create a strong, clean transition to the front door. Integrated step lighting improves safety while adding a subtle, refined detail.
Problems Solved
Behind the scenes, this project addressed several key concerns:
- Improved drainage through proper grading
- Long-term durability with flexible paver construction
- Safer access with level surfaces and consistent steps
- Stronger curb appeal from street to front door
A Finished Space That Simply Works
The result is a driveway and entry that feels natural, solid, and well-matched to the home. It supports daily life, enhances curb appeal, and eliminates the frustrations of the old concrete — a clean, functional upgrade built to last.
