What a real turf installation looks like
The turf itself is the part you see. The installation is the part that decides whether it still looks good in year ten.
The old lawn comes out, excavated several inches down. A compacted aggregate base goes in, graded for drainage, because turf over poorly draining ground turns into a waterbed in a Washington winter. The turf is stretched, seamed, and fastened, then infill is brushed in to keep the blades standing and the surface stable.
Drainage is the whole game here. Quality turf drains rain straight through, but only if the base under it moves that water somewhere. This is where the Pacific Northwest punishes shortcut installs, and it is why we grade and compact the base with the same care we put under a paver patio.
What it costs
An average artificial turf project in Washington runs $8,000 to $28,000 installed. That range is wide because the drivers are wide: yard size, access, how much excavation and grading the site needs, and the turf quality you choose.
The number only makes sense next to what it replaces. A natural lawn costs you every single year: water through the dry months, mowing, fertilizing, reseeding the mud patches. Turf front-loads the cost, then mostly stops charging you. For most yards the crossover lands within several years, and everything after that is savings plus a lawn that looks the same in February as it does in July.
When turf wins, and when it doesn’t
Turf wins on shaded yards where grass will not grow, mud-prone areas, dog runs, small urban yards where a mower is overkill, and anywhere you are tired of the water bill. It also wins for purpose-built spaces: a pet turf area with the right infill and drainage handles dogs in a way grass never will, and a backyard putting green simply is not possible with natural grass in this climate.
Grass still wins if you love the ritual of a real lawn, or the space doubles as a garden that needs living soil. We will tell you straight if your yard is one where turf does not make sense.
What to ask any turf installer
How deep is the excavation? How is the base compacted and graded? What infill are you using and why? What is the drainage plan? And what does the warranty cover, the product, the workmanship, or both?
The product warranty comes from the manufacturer. The workmanship is on the installer, and it is where cheap installs fall apart: wrinkles, seams that open, low spots that puddle.
