Sta-Built Construction built a raised backyard putting green in Portland, OR in April 2026. The green sits on a low Weston Stone grade wall that levels a lawn that used to fall away toward a river rock drainage swale, and a new Belgard Catalina Grana paver landing with a charcoal border replaced a worn paver pad and a line of concrete stepping stones.

Before and after
The problem
Site photos from the March 2026 visit show a narrow backyard with a large plain concrete patio, a strip of lawn beside it that sloped down toward the fence, a small aging paver pad at the corner of the house, and a line of concrete stepping stones running through the grass. Along the low side, a river rock swale with a boulder handled runoff. None of it was flat enough for a putting surface, and the old pad and stepping stones were mossy and uneven.
The solution
Sta-Built built the green as a raised platform. A Weston Stone grade wall holds a compacted gravel base level along the low side, the Birdie Putt turf sits on that base with a cup and flag, and a new paver landing at the corner of the house ties the green to the existing concrete patio.
A putting green only works if the surface is level and consistent, and this lawn fell away toward the rock swale. Rather than cut the high side down and disturb the drainage, the design put the green on a Weston Stone grade wall, 1 foot to 1 foot 6 inches tall on the low side, so the compacted base could be built up flat. The river rock swale stayed in place below the wall to keep carrying water away from the house, and the existing concrete patio was left as is with the green built right up to its edge.
The old paver pad and the stepping stones were pulled and replaced with one Catalina Grana paver landing at the corner of the house, framed with a charcoal Holland soldier course. Large slab steps lead up from the landing to the green.
The materials
The putting surface is Birdie Putt putting green turf, cut from a single 32-foot run and held at the perimeter by about 78 feet of plastic edge restraint, per the design sheet. The wall is Belgard Weston Stone, tumbled, in Victorian, a gray and tan blend. The landing is Belgard Catalina Grana in Victorian laid in a random pattern, with a Belgard Holland border in Charcoal set as a soldier course along about 32 feet of edge. The green and landing sit on a compacted gravel base.
How it was built
Work ran from April 20 to April 24, 2026. The crew stripped the lawn, pulled the old pad and stepping stones, and set the first course of the Weston Stone wall on April 20. By April 21 the wall was built and capped and gravel was being spread and compacted inside it to bring the platform level. On April 23 the base was screeded flat and the Catalina Grana landing and Holland border were laid at the corner of the house. The turf, cup, and flag went in last, with final photos taken April 24. Pavers were delivered to one side of the driveway so the garage stayed clear.
The finished result
The sloped strip of lawn is now a level green with a clean block edge, sitting a step above the rock swale that still drains the yard. The mossy paver pad and stepping stones are gone, replaced by one Catalina Grana landing with a charcoal border and slab steps up to the putting surface. The concrete patio stayed exactly where it was, so the homeowners kept their existing seating area and gained a green beside it.

Three things drove this price beyond the turf itself: the Weston Stone grade wall needed to level the slope, the new paver landing and border that replaced the old pad and path, and the demolition of the existing surfaces.
