Before and after
The problem
The backyard is built around a long pool with a stamped concrete deck and a raised hot tub, all inside a tall clipped hedge. Between the deck and the hedge on one side sat a planting bed that had grown into a mass of shrubs and groundcover, with a tree in the middle of it. The April 23 photos show the bed spilling over its edging onto the deck.
The solution
The May 20 design turns that bed into three things. A paver strip runs the length of the pool deck, 61 feet 3 inches on the drawing and 6 feet wide, with a wider section around the hot tub. Behind it, the ground is graded down to a new lawn held by a low retaining wall along the hedge, about 32 feet by 14 feet on the drawing. At the far end, a 10 foot Mega-Arbel circle in Rio sits inside the same border as the main pavers.
The materials
The field paver is Belgard Dimensions 12 in Cheswick, listed as DuraFusion on the order, a large-format paver in white and gray tones. The border is Belgard Catalina Grana 6×9 in Charcoal, laid as a single dark band that outlines the strip, the hot tub section, and the circle. The circle is Belgard Mega-Arbel patio slab in Rio. The wall is Belgard Diamond 10D in Rio with Charcoal XL caps. The order also lists EasyJoint jointing sand in Stone Gray, Portland cement, and geotextile fabric, from Trend Set.
How it was built
On July 16 the crew cleared the bed with a compact track loader, pulling the tree out with its full root ball, and dug out the strip beside the pool deck.
Fabric and crushed rock went down on July 20 and were compacted by July 21. When the material arrived on July 21 it was short the geotextile fabric and part of the Mega-Arbel order, so the project manager reordered those from the supplier. By July 22 the pavers were running along the pool deck, with the Charcoal border cut tight to the existing concrete around the deck drain.
Clearing the bed took more digging than the work order planned. The work order called for 6 cubic yards of excavation; the extra excavation, extra sod, and the tree and stump removal were added by change order on August 3.
The finished result
The bed is now a paver walkway along the pool deck, a lawn held by a low wall in front of the hedge, and a round sitting spot at the end. The crew photos do not show the light fixtures, so this post does not describe them beyond the work order.
What a project like this costs
Project investment range: $23,900 to $37,600. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.
The 547 square feet of large-format pavers and the 58 foot back wall drive most of this price, followed by the sod, the lights, and clearing the old bed. Every load went in and out past the existing pool deck. The range covers the original contract; the August 3 change order for extra excavation, extra sod, and the tree and stump removal is not included.

Related questions
What does a paver patio and back wall like this cost in Bellevue, WA?
This project came in between $23,900 and $37,600, covering 547 square feet of pavers, a 58 foot Diamond 10D wall with caps, 350 square feet of sod, and a 5-light package. The range reflects this completed project and is not a current quote.
What materials were used?
Belgard Dimensions 12 pavers in Cheswick, a Belgard Catalina Grana 6×9 border in Charcoal, Belgard Mega-Arbel in Rio for the circle, and Belgard Diamond 10D wall block in Rio with Charcoal XL caps, set with EasyJoint jointing sand in Stone Gray.
Can pavers be added next to an existing pool deck?
On this job they were. The stamped concrete deck and its drains stayed, and the new Charcoal border was cut and set tight against the existing concrete so the two surfaces meet in a clean line.
How long did the installation take?
The crew photos run from clearing the bed on July 16, 2026, through base work on July 20 and 21 and pavers on July 22, to the finished patio, wall, and lawn on July 29.
