It is the first question every homeowner asks, and the one most contractors dodge. So here is the straight answer up front: an average-sized paver patio in Washington runs $10,000 to $20,000 installed.
That range is real, and where your project lands inside it comes down to a handful of factors you can actually see and control. Here is how paver patio installation pricing works, so you can budget honestly and compare bids without guessing.
What you’re actually paying for
A paver patio is a layered system, and most of the cost is in the layers you never see.
The site gets excavated to the right depth. A compacted gravel base goes down, then bedding sand, then the pavers themselves, then edge restraints and joint sand. In our Pacific Northwest climate, the base work matters more than anywhere else: months of rain will find any shortcut in the excavation or compaction, and a patio with a weak base heaves, sinks, and separates within a few winters.
That is why two bids for the same square footage can be thousands apart. One includes the full base system. The other is pavers on dirt with a discount price and a short life.
What pushes the price up or down
Size. The biggest driver. More square footage means more excavation, more base, more material, more labor. But cost per square foot usually drops as size goes up, since setup and mobilization spread across a bigger job.
Paver choice. Standard concrete pavers anchor the low end of the range. Premium shapes, patterns, and natural stone push toward the top. Pattern complexity adds cutting time, and cutting is labor.
Access and slope. A flat backyard with wide gate access is the easy case. A sloped yard, tight access, or hauling material around the house adds hours to every stage.
What’s under and around it. Drainage needs, tree roots, old concrete to demolish and haul away. These show up in the site visit, which is why an honest quote requires one.
Extras that turn a patio into a space. A seat wall, a fire pit, lighting. These add cost, but they are also what make the patio the room you actually use ten months a year.
How to compare bids without getting burned
Ask every contractor the same three questions. How deep is the excavation? What goes in the base? What happens if it settles?
The first two answers tell you whether you are comparing the same project. The third tells you who stands behind their work. At Sta-Built, the answer to the third one is simple: our paver craftsmanship carries a 25-year workmanship warranty. If the patio we build settles or shifts because of our work, we fix it.
A suspiciously cheap bid is almost always missing base depth, edge restraint, or the warranty. That discount gets repaid later, with interest, in repairs.
Making the number work
A patio is a five-figure project, and there is no honest way around that. Two things help.
First, financing options can spread the cost into a monthly number instead of a lump sum. Second, a properly built and sealed paver patio is a decades-long asset. Unlike a wood deck, it does not rot, and unlike poured concrete, a settled paver can be lifted and reset instead of demolished.
