Sta-Built Construction installed a 355 square foot Belgard paver patio with a charcoal border behind a home in Tacoma, WA, completed in late August 2026. The job replaced cracked exposed-aggregate concrete, bare gravel, and patchy lawn with a finished surface between the main house and the back structure, and added eleven 24-inch stepping stones.

Before and after
The problem
The space behind this home was leftover construction ground. Site photos from the first visit show sections of old exposed-aggregate concrete that had cracked and broken apart, loose gravel, and thin strips of lawn. The back of the house and the detached structure framed a space with no finished surface connecting them.
The solution
Sta-Built replaced the failed surfaces with a single interlocking paver patio spanning the space between the two structures, plus a stepping stone path. Pavers made sense here because the old poured concrete had already cracked from ground movement. Individual pavers tolerate that movement better, and if a section ever settles, the same pavers can be lifted, the base re-leveled, and the surface reset. A cracked slab usually has to be cut out and replaced.
The materials
Everything came from SiteOne. The field is Belgard Catalina Grana, a three-piece modular slab in the Rio color blend, which gives the patio its varied large-format pattern. The border is Belgard Brooklyn 3 in x 9 in pavers in Midnight, the dark charcoal course that wraps the entire patio and picks up the home’s dark siding. The eleven stepping stones are Belgard Plaza 24 in x 24 in slabs, also in Midnight.
The material order also included geotextile fabric, joint sand, and Portland cement, the supporting layer most people never see in the finished photos.
How it was built
The crew cleared the old surface material and graded the footprint. Progress photos show the full area prepped with a compacted gravel base before a single paver went down. A compacted aggregate base is standard practice for interlocking pavers. It gives the surface even support and lets water drain instead of pooling under the patio.
On top of that base, the crew laid the Catalina Grana field in a modular pattern, set the Brooklyn border course around the perimeter, and swept jointing sand into the joints. The working challenge on this job was the site itself: a tight space between two structures, which means hand transport and careful cutting rather than open-yard machine work.
The finished result
The cracked concrete and bare gravel are gone. The home now has a defined 355 square foot patio connecting the house and the back structure, with a dark border that frames the light gray field, and a matching stepping stone path. Final photos were taken in early September 2026 after cleanup.
