Before and after

After, July 21: the Urbana Stone patio with the Shelton seat wall wrapping its back corner.

The problem

The site visit photos from early June 2026 show the back of the house as it was: an exposed-aggregate concrete slab outside the sliding door, divided into panels by wood strips, with old landscape timbers edging the planting beds behind it and a narrow concrete walk running down the side of the house. Grass was growing in some of the joints. The homeowners had a date in mind: family was coming to town, and they hoped to have it done by August 8.

The solution

The plan replaced the old concrete with pavers from the sliding door out to the lawn and down the side of the house, and added a freestanding seat wall around the back corner of the new patio. A drain pipe runs behind the wall.

The plan changed at the July 7 walk-through. The photos from that visit show the layout chalked onto the old slab, with the seat wall’s line marked. After the visit, the record notes the seat wall cap still to be chosen, and the original line items for four sono tube footings and 40 square feet of sod were taken off the scope, with the square footage and the seat wall updated to match.

The materials

The pavers are Belgard Urbana Stone, a multi-size paver laid in a random pattern; the material order lists it in two colors, Victorian and Rio. The seat wall is Belgard Shelton Wall in Victorian, and the order lists its cap in Midnight. Joints are filled with Easy Joint in Stone Gray, and the order includes geotextile fabric and ADS perforated drain pipe with a filter sock for behind the wall. The supplier on the order is Winsupply Tacoma.

How it was built

Demolition ran July 15. The photos show the concrete along the house broken out into rubble, the old wood divider strips pulled, and a tape measure held at the broken edge of the slab.

By July 17 the pavers were going down along the house and out across the patio, with edge pieces cut to fit with a cut-off saw. On July 20 the seat wall went up along the back and side of the patio, course by course, with its caps staged on the pavers, and the walkway down the side of the house was compacted. The finished patio was photographed July 21.

The old slab and its wood strips are gone. The patio now runs from the sliding door to the lawn in one paver surface, the seat wall gives the back corner a built-in place to sit, and the side of the house has a paver walkway instead of the narrow concrete strip. The homeowners signed their warranty card on July 21.

What a project like this costs

Project investment range: $21,900 to $34,400. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.

Three things set this price. The 580 square feet of patio and walkway is the largest piece. The seat wall is its own build, with a drain pipe run behind all 28 feet of it. And the old concrete had to come out before any base went in.
