Before and after

Before: the backyard at the February 7 site visit, a thin, uneven lawn running along the rock wall.

After, March 12: turf from the rock wall across the yard, with the stepping stones set through it toward the patio.

The problem

The February 7, 2026 site visit photos show a backyard lawn that was thin and uneven, with bare patches near the house, running along a tall rock wall at the back fence. The side yards were bare in places. One was a strip of worn grass and dirt between the fence and the house with old timbers lying along the foundation. The other was a grass strip past the A/C unit to the side gates. A small concrete patio sat off the back of the house.

February 7: one of the side yards, worn grass and dirt between the fence and the house, with old timbers along the foundation.

The solution

The design sheet turns the yard into two materials. Turf fills the open backyard from the rock wall to a curved paver edge, and pavers take over around the house: a patio off the back, then walkways down both side yards to the gates and the garage door opening, fitted around the A/C pad. A curved line of large stepping stones crosses the turf. The first design sheet in the file, from February 9, left the paver color to be decided at the walk-through. The revised sheet from February 11 names Belgard Dimensions DuraFusion in Scandina Grey.

The materials

The pavers are Belgard Dimensions DuraFusion in Scandina Grey, a large-format paver laid in a mixed pattern, framed by a Scandina Grey 6×12 border. The stepping stones are 24×36 Belgard Dimensions in Scandina Grey on the design sheet. The turf is 2K-Volume synthetic turf on the work order, which the design sheet calls Real Feel turf, with five cut lengths drawn out for the backyard. The planting bed gets red medium fir beauty bark.

How it was built

On February 26 the grass was gone, the yard was graded to bare base, string lines were set, and pallets of pavers were staged in the backyard. By the end of that day the first stepping stones were set into the base, and pavers were going down beside them.

March 3: the stepping stones set in a line across the base, with the patio pavers going in along the house behind them.

The March 3 photos show the work at its widest point. The patio was being laid along the back of the house, one side yard was paved along the fence, the pavers were cut in around the A/C pad, and the open backyard was graded to a crushed rock base for the turf. The turf rolls arrived the same day. On March 6 and 7, with the new pavers wet, the second side yard was based and edged.

By March 12 the turf was down from the rock wall to the paver edge with the stepping stones set through it, and bags of infill were staged on the stones. Both side yards were finished in pavers.

The finished result

March 12: a side yard finished in Scandina Grey pavers with its border, meeting the turf at the back.

The lawn and the dirt side yards are gone. The backyard is turf from the rock wall to the curved paver edge, the stepping stones give a path across it, and pavers now run around the house from the patio to the gates. The rock wall, the A/C pad, and the gates all stayed where they were, with the new surfaces fitted around them.

What a project like this costs

Project investment range: $53,800 to $84,500. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.

This is two projects in one yard. The 2,150 square feet of turf is the largest area, and the 1,000 square feet of large-format pavers around the house is the second. Both side yards are narrow runs between the fence and the house, paved end to end. The 14 large stepping stones and the beauty bark bed are smaller lines on top.

Related questions

What does artificial turf with paver walkways cost in Renton, WA?

This project came in between $53,800 and $84,500, covering 2,150 square feet of synthetic turf, 1,000 square feet of Belgard Dimensions DuraFusion pavers, 14 large stepping stones, and a beauty bark bed. The range reflects this completed project and is not a current quote.

What materials were used?

Belgard Dimensions DuraFusion pavers in Scandina Grey with a Scandina Grey 6×12 border, 24×36 Belgard Dimensions stepping stones in Scandina Grey, 2K-Volume synthetic turf (Real Feel turf on the design sheet), and red medium fir beauty bark.

Can turf go right up to an existing rock wall?

On this project it did. The rock wall along the back fence stayed in place, and the turf was laid from its base across the yard to the paver edge.

How were the side yards handled?

Both side yards were paved instead of turfed. The pavers run between the fence and the house to the gates and the garage door opening, cut in around the concrete A/C pad.

How long did the installation take?

Base work started February 26, 2026, the pavers and stepping stones went in through early March, and the turf was finished by March 12. The record closes the job on March 16.
