Before and after

After, October 2: the rebuilt patio from the back steps, with the Charcoal border and the seat wall at the far corner.

The problem

This yard already had pavers: a patio at the foot of curved paver steps from the back door, and a paver path running along the house through the side-yard gate. By the June 5 photos the surface had faded to a pinkish gray, and the joints were full of fir needles, cones, and growth. The patio was in a tight space, boxed in by the house, the steps, and a wood fence on the gate side.

The solution

The work order replaces the old pavers: 319 square feet of new pavers in the same space, a darker Charcoal border to outline the patio and path, and a 16 foot freestanding seat wall on the lawn side. The existing curved steps stay, and the new border runs around their base. A change order on September 15 added more paver square footage to the job.

The materials

Everything came from Western Interlock. The field paver is Cobble Park and Plaza in Jamestown, a multi-size rectangular paver in a mix of brown, tan, and gray. The border is Western Interlock Holland Stone in Charcoal. The seat wall is Chateau Wall, with both Cambridge and Charcoal on the material order. The order also lists joint sand, Portland cement, and geotextile fabric.

How it was built

On September 15 the crew measured the space, including the run along the fence, the steps, and the downspout at the corner of the house. The new pavers were delivered on pallets on September 18. On September 22 the crew lifted the old pavers, stacking them beside the house, and by September 23 the bedding layer was screeded flat from the steps to the fence and through the gate.

The seat wall courses were going in by September 25. Pavers went down on September 28, with the Charcoal border laid tight around the base of the curved steps and along the house.

What a project like this costs

Project investment range: $5,100 to $8,000. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.

Two line items drive this price: 319 square feet of new pavers and 16 linear feet of seat wall. The old patio’s footprint and the existing steps set the layout, and the work stayed in a fenced space reached through the side-yard gate. The range covers the original contract; the additional paver square footage added by change order is not included.
