Before and after

After: the patio level under the deck, the seat wall along its outside edge, and the steps climbing the side yard.

The problem

This house has a raised deck across the back, and the ground under it falls away from the foundation. Site visit photos from late February and March 2026 show bare dirt and weeds under the deck, concrete post footings standing out of the slope, and a side yard that runs uphill along the fence to the gate with no path at all. The space under the deck was covered from the weather but could not be used.

The solution

The design sheet levels the area under the deck into a patio about 36 feet long, held on its downhill side by a retaining wall with a seat wall built above it. A Belgard seat couch fills the far corner, and a stair runs the length of the side yard, down from the gate to the patio. The project file also holds 3D renderings of the patio, seat couch, and stairs made at the design stage in March.

The deck posts stay where they are. Where a post lands near the steps, the design sheet calls for it to be boxed in block with Charcoal half caps cored with a 6 inch hole for the post. In March the homeowners added 66 square feet of pavers by change order, and in June they added lighting for the steps.

The materials

The patio field is Belgard Dimensions 12 in Chiswick, a large-format paver laid in a mixed pattern, framed by a Midnight runner border. The retaining wall is Diamond 10D block in Rio, with geogrid in the wall. The seat couch is Weston Stone untumbled in Rio with one row of Charcoal along it, and the stair treads are Marina coping with a Midnight 3×9 runner set behind each one, set on block step bases.

How it was built

Work started May 29, 2026. The work order includes 61 feet of wall base prep and 183 square feet of wall face, 24 feet of geogrid, and 14 cubic yards of 5/8 or 3/4 minus gravel. By June 9 the first wall courses were going in around the deck posts, and on June 10 the photos show woven fabric over the leveled grade under the deck with the first pavers going down on it.

June 11: the step blocks set into the side yard slope, with the fabric-covered patio base to the right.

The stairs went in from June 10 to June 13, block bases first and then the coping treads. The seat wall, seat couch, and caps were finished by June 13, and the completion photos were taken June 16. Photos taken after dark once the work was done show the lights working in the seat wall and on the steps.

The slope under the deck is now a level patio with seating built into its edge, the deck footings sit inside the paving or the wall, and the side yard has a stair from the gate to the patio instead of a dirt hill. A clean and seal of the finished pavers was added by change order on June 17.

What a project like this costs

Project investment range: $50,600 to $79,600. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.

Most of this price is in the walls and steps rather than the patio surface. Leveling a slope takes a retaining wall with geogrid before a single paver goes down, and this one carries a seat wall and a seat couch on top. The 117 linear feet of steps up the side yard are their own build. The range is based on the contract total; the three change orders on the record (66 square feet of added pavers, step lighting, and a clean and seal) were tracked separately.
