Before and after

Before: the backyard at the April 11 site visit, bark mulch from the fence to the small covered concrete pad.

After: the paver patio extends out from the covered pad, with its curved end raised on the grade wall.

The problem

The only hard surface in this backyard was a small concrete pad under the covered porch. Everything else was bark mulch, from the house to the back fence, and the side yard along the house was the same mulch with no path. When the crew dug along the back fence in June, the excavation cut into a bank of soil there.

The solution

The design sheet extends the concrete pad with a paver patio about 33 feet long and about 11 feet deep, ending in a curve. That curved end is raised on a grade wall in Weston Stone Tumbled Rio, the work order’s line for a wall up to 18 inches high built to raise levels for hardscaping. Along the back fence, a separate freestanding wall in the same stone runs about 40 feet with a curve near the corner, capped in Charcoal Marina coping.

The side yard got a walkway and a stair. At the May 14 layout visit the stair was chalked out as 14 steps, and the design sheet notes the walkway is Midnight 3×9 and the patio border should match a reference photo of a dark border along a light field. The record also carries a 40 foot French drain, written up as a change order on July 9.

The materials

The material list photographed into the project file names every product. The patio field is Belgard Dimensions 12 in Scandina Gray, a large-format paver, with a Belgard Dimensions 3×9 border in Midnight. Belgard Catalina Grana 6×9 in Rio is also on the list. Both walls are Belgard Weston Stone Universal in Tumbled Rio, and the freestanding wall is capped in Marina coping in Charcoal. The list also includes geotextile fabric, joint sand, and Portland cement.

How it was built

Work started June 22, 2026. The June 23 photos show a trench cut along the back fence, where the freestanding wall runs, and the patio area dug out. By June 25 the first courses of the back wall were set in that trench, with crushed rock spread beside them. The work order base spec under the pavers is a 7 inch excavation, compacted native soil, woven geotextile fabric, 4 inches of crushed rock compacted in 4 inch lifts, and 1 inch of screeded bedding sand.

The side yard stair went up June 29 and 30, block bases first. On July 1 the curved grade wall was complete and the Dimensions 12 field was being laid across its top, and the photos that day show the French drain pipe trenched beside the back corner wall. The patio border was cut in on July 2, and the completion photos were taken July 7.

The side yard: a bordered paver walkway running into the new stair.

The backyard now has a paver patio reaching well past the original concrete pad, its curved end raised on a stone wall with a step down to the yard, a coped garden wall defining the back of the yard, and a paved route up the side of the house where there was only mulch.

What a project like this costs

Project investment range: $20,200 to $31,800. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.

Two walls and a stair drive this price as much as the patio does. The grade wall has to be built before the curved end of the patio can be paved, the freestanding wall is a separate 40 foot build with its own coping, and 51 linear feet of steps up the side yard is its own line on the work order. The 40 foot French drain was a change order and is not part of this range.
